Pre-filters need attention more often. Replace them when pressure drops, when they show visible loading, or according to the service interval established for your water conditions. A cottage with clear well water may have a different filter schedule than a lake-water property after a windy summer. Keep a small record of lamp, sleeve, and filter changes so maintenance does not get lost between visits.

Using genuine replacement lamps, sleeves, and compatible parts is a practical safety decision. The lamp, chamber, sleeve, controller, and flow rating are designed to work as a system. A component that fits physically but does not match the intended specification can compromise performance or shorten equipment life.

UV and boil-water advisories

A correctly operating UV system is an excellent ongoing disinfection barrier, but it does not replace public-health direction during a boil-water advisory. If a municipal authority or local health unit issues an advisory, follow its instructions until it is lifted. Similarly, if your UV alarm signals a fault, treat it as a prompt to investigate immediately rather than assuming the water remains protected.

Some systems include audible or visual alarms, lamp-life indicators, and monitored controllers. These features are particularly useful at cottages, where a system may operate unattended between visits. An alarm does not make maintenance unnecessary, but it helps prevent an unnoticed lamp failure from becoming a prolonged gap in protection.
